The next Battlefield

don't know if you guys have heard anything about this, but the Battlefield people (DICE & EA) are floating a lot of hype about the "next version" of Battlefield. I was reading an article about it in Windows Gamer Mag last night, and then I found a write up about it today over on Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

It sounds kind of interesting, although I wont say that it's as innovative as DICE is trying to come off. A lot of the stuff they are talking about doing has been done in other games. You'll also notice the stylized look of the game, which DICE is quick to tell that they had their look down BEFORE TF2 came out. Which may or may not be, but both of them ripped off the cartoonish look from WoW.

Another thing that stands out to me is their strategy towards the game play and an apparent attempt to rewrite their own history. The example they give is that people hate nade spammers, so we'll deliver unto the gaming world the most nade spam infested game ever... and that will make everything ok. They claim that Battlefield games have always been over the top, stylized... and never intended to be realistic. Battlefield is after all the game that had players jumping on the wings of P-51 to hitch a ride to the other side of a map.

Anyway, have a look: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1049

what do you guys think?

Re: The next Battlefield

yup free, they plan to have a portal style website that will have ads. The idea is that you build a facebook/myspace style website to support the game... and sell ads on the site. So they don't put ads in the game (ie BF2142) which was a stupid idea anyway.

So that lowers the barrier for trying the game. That's good on one level, but the thing is... their whole strategy here is to play to the lowest common denominator. And to embrace glitching and "soft cheats" as features of the game. They're basically saying that all of the stupid shit people would do in the battlefield games, that serious players would bitch about, and DICE spent loads of time trying to patch out of the previous games... was actually intended to be there. Like they were never trying to be realistic, their goal has always been over the top unrealistic game play?!?!?

Anybody that can remember back 2 years knows that's outright BS... and IMHO, a cop out. The companies put out faulty products and fixing them is their biggest nightmare. So, what's the easiest way to avoid that... make the glitches part of the game.

Re: The next Battlefield

notice that's 3rd person not first person view... just thought I'd point that out. Seems really strange none of the game sites have mentioned how wow-esque this game looks.
