ok, has anybody else noticed that the media has just unanimously decided to change the pronunciation of Hezbollah?? All of a sudden somebody decided the end of the word is pronounced the word Ebola.
Hez-Bowl-Ah?!?!?! Did Bush mispronounce it and now all the news agencies are saying it like him or WTF is going on. It's more annoying than the Osama/Usama thing we went thru.
..ok, I'm done ranting now. Carry on
It seems to have started about two weeks ago after the abduction of the soldier(s). The first person whom I recall pronounced it incorrectly was Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "The Situation Room." I am not saying he was the first, just the first that I heard.
The 'Hezbola' virus has spread rapidly thru the rest of the networks. Yes, even the infamous O'Reilley on FOX NEWS pronounced it that way at least once.
Of course, it could have been Gretta, she seems to trip up on pronunciations at fair amount as well.
According to Wikipedia(if you agree with the definitions) has the name spelled may ways...
Pronunciation: ( Arabic. khes"bä-lä'),
kh as in German ach (äkh), ich (ikh); Scottish loch (lokh)
" secondary accent: Mississippi (mis"u s-sip´E )

Well the last one definitely shows the words Arabic roots, since it is roughly "Party of God". That would certainly seem to reinforce that the correct pronunciation is with the word ending sounding like Allah instead of the new Ebola trend.
It just blows my mind that American "news agencies" have been saying the word for something like 30 years and a few weeks ago somebody decided to change it, and it's rippled completely through their ranks. Are they trying to make us crazy with this?!?!?!
Anybody got a copy of the Syriana DVD? That's the most recent piece of media I can think of that may have the previous pronunciation recorded. I'm having a Winston from 1984 moment here and it's messing with my head. I need to hear it pronounced the right way!
Man when I hear it pronounced Hezbola I totally get this picture of G.Dub smirking it out the corner of his mouth.
Is it just me, or does it seem that the overall media, from papers to tv networks to even internet blogs, seem to think Hezbollah is good, and that Israel is the evil force? I was watching CNN yesterday and was shocked to see that they gave free airtime to a Hezbollah leader, and started talking about how bad conditions were.
Also, what about all the inhumane stories you are hearing from people fleeing? There was a story on either CNN or FOX News that showed people in such discomfort for 12 hours on a boat and that they were mad because they did not have rooms, food or beverages. The flaw with this is that A) at least you are out of there. B) The boat that they showed was a frigate to transport freight, not humans C) because of B, isn't it a correct assumption to say that it is obvious they would not have enough food and water to take care of over 2000 people, when the boat was designed to take care of just a hand full of employees?
That's the image Hezbollah, Hamas, IJ etc have carefully cultivated over many years. It’s an integral part of their overall strategy and… the western media eats it up.
Oh and I noticed yesterday that the media had reverted back to the original pronunciation of Hezbollah. So apparently they were just trying to mess with our heads.
That wouldn’t surprise me. Where did you hear it pronounced correctly? I heard something on CNN this morning, (a recap from the Cooper show or whatever) where a citizen of either Israel or Lebanon being interviewed said it correctly. But I don't think that counts.
This morning on the radio. They do an ABC News kicker at the top of the hour for national news. The person who said it correctly this morning is one who said it goofy just a few days ago... so I thought maybe the great Hezbola plague of 2006 was over. Guess not!
